Light of Dawn Staff

Description

It is the most unusual of things, really. I’ve seen very few truly magic staves in my lifetime… Many are wielded as a symbol of one’s power, or as a focusing element, but very few actually contain power in and of themselves. This one, however, seems to be one of those few.

The various runes, and symbols on it tend to indicate that it draws its power from light, yet, nocturnal and gaian sources. However, at this moment I would like to stress that this does not mean that is it full of dark power. There seems to be quite a stink about the darkness and what people call ‘evil’ lately. I would like to take the time to remind you, dear reader, that Nighttime, if you recall is the cradle of the moon, and stars. It’s when fire seems most magnificent, and when fireflies come out. The Night itself is not evil; it is merely that evil travels more easily in it than in daylight.

Yet I digress! These runes, if I may return tot that subject, are fascinating, yet, are not the source of this tool’s power, merely amplifiers. At first I thought the stones imbedded into the wood might be where the power comes from, however, I suspect I was only half right. They may merely be absorption points for energies.

I am now almost certain, that the power of this staff is a reaction between the crystal, the wood of the stave itself, and the earth. It is best demonstrated by tapping the earth with the bottom end of the staff. When this is done, the crystal at the top actually lights up and gives off a soft, purple color, before fading.

Tomorrow, I will have to conduct a few more experiments, and make rubbings of the carved/burnt-in details. However, it seems that the long evening has left me weary, and I must retire.

If you’ve made it this far, congratulations! Creative writing aside, here are my notes on my staff:

This was one of my many summer projects, but I’m only now just getting around to posting it. My normal staff is heavily inspired by Native American aesthetics, so, I decided to make more of a ‘swords and sorcery’ fantasy inspired staff.

Stormwood (Knocked down by the wind), it measures around five and a half feet, and whereas most of the bark has been peeled away, I left some on here and there, usually where there were no insect burrows. Some of the burrows have been decorated with green and or silver paint.

I’ve adorned it with symbols, stones and the like that are interesting to me. Burned into the wood are symbols that are important to me, such as my signature glyph, but also pre existing symbols, such as the runes for Degaz, and the alchemic symbol for silver, among others.

Imbedded into the staff is a piece of hematite, a piece of malachite, and a geode. Some say that hematite has protective, calming properties, and malachite is rumored to have cleansing and healing properties, and happens to be green, an important color to me.

The wraps are made from a supple, soft leather, and the top one has my Grahll Print Tribal located at the back so it rests against my palm. The top wrap also ends with a triquetra, which has and still does stand for a variety of meanings, but in my life, it’s more of a representation of how, for some reason, things seem to come in threes.
The top, however, is what I have to admit, I’m rather pleased with. The “Crystal” at the top is not a crystal at all, but, is in fact, carved plastic. Even if I could afford a crystal that size, I’d be terrified of breaking it by carrying it on a staff. However, there are some advantages to plastic recreations… because like my shock crystal wand, this too, lights up when jarred. Video of this can be seen here:
