The Ragarog are a dyeing breed. There are only sparse populations of them spattered throughout Europe, which makes them incredibly hard to study.
In their innate sentience and humanity, they are not unlike the far more common species, the wolven Grahll, however, while yet another breed of lycanthrope, they are very different in terms of behavior and biology.
The Ragarogs shifts are tied entirely to the waxing and waning of the moon. On the days preceding the full moon, they display slight canine characteristics. These are most often longer fingernails, slight fuzzyness, and small fangs. On the full moon, however, their full lycanthropic nature manifests.
In old werewolf legends, it was said that the lycanthrope could turn its skin inside out, and that the fur would be underneath the human dermis. Many suspected werewolves were cut open in search of this inside out fur, and supposedly was never successful.
However, this myth is not entirely without truth. Unlike other lycanthropic species, the lycanthropes fur grows beneath the skin, which peels away, often in a single piece. This seems a bit like a snake shedding its skin, however, is a bit more viscous on the inside.
Ragarog werewolves lose a lot more of their human mental selves when in this state than Grahll do, but are not monsters. They behave in a rather lupine matter and, when they shed their skin, as it were, they are suddenly supplied with a large bit of protein to sate their appetite the instant they are done shapeshifting.
However, this is also the point where they are closest to human habitation, and also when they are most often discovered. With a mostly in-tact skin in its claws, a wandering villager may interpret the grizzly appearance of the scene as a brutal murder.
I suspect that most of the Ragarog were wiped out in the 1600s during the witch and werewolf hunts. In fact, for a time, they may have been wiped out all together. However, the Ragarok curse is not passed on as a viral agent like Grahll, but seems to be genetic in nature. If the Ragarok gene is a recessive trait, it is possible that they were extinct for a brief time, only to reappear in the next generation.
"When the change comes... I shed mt sin moreso than mmy skin."
I had intended to save this for the 23rd. Huh.
Anyway, another breed of werewolf, but not my favorite. There's a lot of biodiversity in my own little fantasy world.
Sheesh! This looks well-researched, implying you've REALLY done your homework on lyanthropy! You must share your research with me! I LOVE werewolves so much I wish I were one myself!

Before you criticize someone, walk a mile in their shoes. That way, when you criticize them, you're a mile away and you have their shoes.
