Let's Solve a Mystery! by Nashoba-Hostina Let's Solve a Mystery! by Nashoba-Hostina

Work has been, well, awful lately.  So, I decided that I was going to quit my job and solve mysteries for a living: debunking hoaxes, chasing cryptids, and busting ghosts.  My friends :iconwolfsjal: and :iconsagekorppi: opted to join in!  Now we’re a cartoon trio with unrealistic quirks who are off to help people!

Though I think we’d all share responsibilities for the group for the most part, I think that when it boils down to it, in terms of the Scooby formula, Wolfsjal usually fills the ‘leader’ role, mostly because she’s got the flashiest abilities.  With magic skills, so long as she can borrow enough energy from the living things around her, she can do all sorts of nifty tricks.  Like provide light when the flashlights die.  Or blow stuff up, occasionally.  That’s very useful.  I ask her to do that a lot.

SageKorppi typically falls into the ‘brains’ role, able to debunk hoaxes and outsmart ghoulies.  She’s also… really good with corvids.  Like, creepy-good.  She even has a very intelligent ‘pet’ talking raven (because there has to be an animal sidekick) that seems to basically be on the same mental wavelength as she is.  It’s great to have around for scouting and information-gathering.  It also may have turned into a black coyote once.  It was a weird night for me; I don’t remember it well.

As for me? I fill the ‘scardeycat’ role.  Unfortunately, I have a hairy little problem… That is, I’m a werewolf, and if it’s the full moon or if I get too spooked or startled, I tend to wolf out.  Sometimes, I’m able to help out in such cases, but I’m also just as likely to be the cause of even more problems, depending on how good a grip I have on myself.  Needless to say, hijinks ensue.  Thankfully, Sagekorppi’s raven speaks werewolf, and Wolfsjal’s magic can help keep me in line.

Now I just gotta get a minivan.

It’s kinda weird.  I watched a lot of Scooby Doo when I was younger,  you know?  Started on A Pup Named Scooby Doo and then quickly got to the good stuff, the classic cartoons and such.  But I also look back at my other fandoms and interests… I LOVED Fangface for obvious reasons, and the other young adults+sidekick cartoons were fun.  I really liked Buffy the Vampire Slayer, comics like Beasts of Burden and Hoax Hunters, and now I’m really into Gravity Falls, and I’m somewhat ashamed to admit that I really enjoy the plethora of ghost hunting and cryptid chasing programs out there (I love watching them debunk stuff).  I guess I’m still into Scooby Doo, just in different forms.

The theme of Scooby Doo is a pretty good one.  It just depends on how it's done.  Myself, I kinda prefer Mystery Inc. which has better animation and, in my opinion, better characterization.  And even though they tend to poke fun at some of the cliches from the old show (like how Fred breaks down a little when Daphne leaves the group... only to expect her to show up to help with a trap just because), it seems like a good tribute.  Plus, the big mystery of the original Mystery Inc. group and why they broke up kinda hooked me, making me want to watch through the whole series to find out the truth behind that.

Plus, they didn't seem to put any nonsense into their mysteries.  I hated the vampire movie they set in Australia, because they had the vampires moving in ways that could not be explained by the reason given!  Swinging on climbing ropes?  Nonsense!  That would not explain the way their flying was animated!  Sloppy work, that.  Ticks me off.

Haven't seen much of Gravity Falls, but I'd like to fix that.  It seems like a hilarious show, and I am interested in what the secret is behind all the weirdness.

YES YES A THOUSAND TIMES YES. Ahhh, this reminds me of the Cartoon Action Hour campaign I played once, we went for a Hanna-Barbera mystery show clone, too. We were in the UK between the first and second world wars, investigating parnormal activity and occasionally playing jazz and ragtime music in pubs. The animal sidekick was the only competent fighter in the group, a mean, grumpy Persian cat named Precious, although she could not talk.

You should check out the Cartoon Action Hour rpg if you're interested in fleshing this idea out more. It's a fairly simple system to run.

Oh my goodness, that game sounds magnificent!  Makes me wish my friends lived closer so we could play it with relative ease.  Also, I'll be sure to steer clear of any cats by that name ;3

So, we take the concept of mythbuster cartoons (if there is also a
Mythbuster cartoon, that would be funny) and put in actual myths...
sounds basically like the bad guys are screwed. Mostly, if they get
hit by magic missles or startle the wrong person. Or run into the
Slenderman, because why not.

I sense an Evil presence in the background...

I really like how this looks, now you just need to slap a title on the bottom and call it a night! Do you think you could go more in-depth with this? Like how everyone got the way the are?

Maybe I didn't make it subtle enough ;3

I would LOVE to expand this idea, and have tons and tons of thoughts on it, but, since two of the characters are based upon real people, I'd need to okay it through them.

That makes sense, BUT IMAGINE WHERE YOU COULD TAKE THIS!

It'd be so interesting to see a Scooby Doo-type of comic, But the monsters are REAL! And the Mystery Gang would be the Mythical Pack (get it? Cause your wolf? :3), How cool would that be?

Nash, you are the best.  <3
We shall do this.  Let's go monster and ghost and ghoul and cryptid hunting together! We make the best Buffy style Scooby gang ever, I think.
I still adore the little spiral bobs on the trees and grasses, lol, and it was a pleasure watching this happen.  Thanks again for including me, and letting Dresdening be a thing. :3

And so are you <3

Heeeeee, it'll be so awesome!

The spiral bobs are a holdover from my Kingdom Hearts obsession.  Several of the Heartless enemies in it have a jagged spiral motif.

You get to Dresden all the things now :3

I bet you guys solve all sorts of mysteries by pulling human masks off of creatures.

Scardeywolf seems to fit better.
