I Dream of the Crescent Moon by Nashoba-Hostina I Dream of the Crescent Moon by Nashoba-Hostina
In the sky I see a cup of stardust,
A pair or silver horns upon my head,
Matching the melanin mark on my shoulder.
It shines upon me while I lie in my bed,
As I dream of the crescent moon.

Happy Holidays everyone! Look, I took a picture of Dreamsand!

So, I happened to catch Rise of the Guardians on the 21st.

It strikes me as a film done by people who did their research, then threw it out the window and did their own, wonderful, brilliant thing. (Yet they kept Ratón Pérez. Kudos.)

If you’ve ever read Mark Twain’s “A Letter from Santa Claus,” the film has that kind of feel to it. It’s comfortable and familiar but also new and fresh. Frankly, my childhood just got an upgrade. Now… is it a perfect film? No. Not in the slightest. I have serious issues with it. However, the fact that I can have big beefs with the film and STILL really enjoy it says a lot for it. I was pleased to note in the credits that apparently it’s based upon a book series. I’ll have to look into them, I expect.

In short… it’s a good film that really isn’t doing as well as it should. Please, go see it; I’d like to see it do better.

This is lovely. I hope you had a nice holiday as well. I'm curious, though, about what you didn't like about Rise of the Guardians. If you don't mind my asking. I also really enjoyed while being annoyed with some of the way they played with the mythology and wondered what your experience was like.

The messing with mythology I can handle… I mean, I didn’t really expect Jack to be old Jokul Frosti, and I’m more amused than bothered that Bunnymund is Australian when rabbits aren’t even native to Australia… My main problems are with Pitch… Now, don’t get me wrong. I adored the character, but he was all “No one believes in me; I thrive on fear” and I just kept thinking: “Dude. Halloween. You have your own holiday! Fear and darkness everywhere!” I also wish he had more of a backstory, because he was such a nifty villain.

He was, and I agree on his needing more back story. I had some friends point out the Halloween connection, but I'm not sure he would have gone for it. Modern Halloween is much more about the "fun" scare than anything legitimately dangerous. I think Nightmare Before Christmas really captured the feel of modern Halloween.

The thing I kept thinking was with all the legitimate applications of fear, such as a teacher or a challenger, why couldn't they find something for Pitch to be? When he says "You can't kill fear" I kept thinking "No, but you can learn from it."
