Canis Dirus by Nashoba-Hostina Canis Dirus by Nashoba-Hostina
While I am a book-lover, Iím a big fan of going out and collecting my own references when possible. It is, in my opinion, good to unplug, get out of the studio, and take a field trip once in a while.

Now, while my preferred subject matter is fantasy, that does not mean that I donít have a whole freaking lot to learn from the natural world, so, when possible, I take trips to the zoo and do life sketches, head to the museum and take photograps, and head out into nearby parks to immerse myself in nature.

Most of my sketches and photos areÖ well, theyíre not bad. Theyíre not great though. The photos in particular are there just to be references; composition and such isnít taken into consideration. However, this particular shot isnít too bad, so I thought that Iíd share it. Maybe itíll be of interest to someone else studying such things too.

I visited the LaBrea Tar pits in LA once. Totally fixated on the Smileodons back then. I remember freaking out over an egret that had gotten stuck in the water covered goop, and imagining how awful it would be to die that way.
Way cool displays though, still have a ton of bad photos myself.

Ooooh, I'm so jealous! I hope to get to visit them myself sometime. (Well, sans sad egret though...) *Bad photo high five*

Yay for old-school film cameras that made boxes of bad photos possible!
Have you seen the replica fossil casts that LaBrea let Bone Clones make of their exhibits? For the price of a small SUV you can own an entire 12 foot tall articulated short faced bear skeleton...

Let's see... arcording to wikipedia, it's legs are shorter than those of a gray wolf, which could mean that they weren't as efficient in hunting as their lighter cousins. I just wonder how much the difference between the intelligence of a gray wolf (larger brain, seemingly) and a dire wolf is. Well, we may never know (till scientist find some clues).

So wait, that's the remains of an actual (possible) Dire wolf?
